3 reasons why you need to be a Christian Ninja.
A few weeks ago my wife anonymously did something really kind for someone.
While she chose to quietly celebrate the heart of what she did, I wanted to erect a billboard telling the world of her random act of kindness.
Its so frustrating cause I love to give but I feel like with my generosity comes this constant lust for recognition.
I know most of us read the bible for our neighbors [I really wish so and so could hear this right now] but when I read Matthew 5, I know Jesus is talking to me...
I'm the pharisee.
I want the world to praise my efforts.
But Jesus says no Sammy. There's a better way. A different way. The sneaky, secret ninja way.
When you give, do it in secret.
I guess I feel like God has been challenging me to be a Christian Ninja.
For those of you who don't know what a Ninja is, please leave a comment so I can pray for you, they are primarily known for doing their business in the most secretive, stealth, covert mode.
So in reality a Ninja could be untying your shoe laces and stealing your tennis shoes right now and you'd not even know it.
I think thats the kind of posture Jesus desires for us to have with giving/kindness e.t.c
But like I said, i'm bad at this so I've been trying to tell myself why Jesus's way makes sense. Hope you can learn something from my self sermons.
3 reasons why you need to be a Christian Ninja
1. Ninjas got heart.
Its easy to give when you get public accolade. Giving in secret actually forces you to wrestle with the greed in your heart. So while giving publicly is simply an act, the kind of giving Jesus talks about actually results in heart change because it compels us to not just give but to be generous people.
2. Ninjas got treasure.
I know its the oldest joke among you and your Christian buddies but believe it or not, Jesus actually says by giving, you are storing up treasures in heaven. So while public giving has its perks, ninja generosity offers much more; heavenly treasures.
So go ahead, store up as many treasures as you can in heaven. I know it feels weird but I didn't say it. Jesus did.
3. Ninjas got jokes.
"What happens in white house stays in white house". Only my wife and some close friends understand that last sentence. Its called an inside joke.
Giving in secret is like an inside joke between you and Jesus. No one else knows about it. No one else 'appreciates' it. No one else can share in the moment. No one except you and Jesus. Pretty cool when you think about that way isn't it?
This week, I'm on the look out to be a Ninja to someone. No bells. No billboards. No accolades. Just me and Jesus being generous, storing up treasure and sharing inside jokes.
What about you? Will you serve someone in secret today?
Maybe secretly mow a neighbors lawn?
Pick up a shift for a co-worker?
Send anonymous flowers to a friend? your husband?
Send an anonymous letter to your church?
How can you be a Christian ninja this week? For obvious reasons, you can leave a comment as anonymous if you wanna tell us how you will be a Christian Ninja.
Why do you think its hard for us to give secretly?
Also, what is the best thing you've ever seen someone do secretly?
