The 5th spiritual law: Now you die.
The [Five?] Spiritual laws:
Law 1: God loves you and has a great plan for you. [YIPEE]
Law 2: You are sinful and consequently separated from God. [BUMMER]
Law 3: Jesus made a way for you back to God by the cross. [WOO-HOO]
Law 4: Salvation is free through faith. [YEE-HAW]
Law 5: Now you die. Or suffer greatly. Or lose everything. Or live till you’re 90 in perfect health. Who knows. Strap in. Joy awaits you. [HUH?]
Did you know that almost all the ‘good guys’ in Gods story [New testament] were brutally murdered? Check it out...
According to church history, this is what happened to those who walked ahead of this journey we are on...
[Strap on cause this is crazy]
Simon Peter: Crucified upside down.
Andrew: Crucified.
James: Beheaded.
John: Exiled, died of old age.
Matthew: Speared to death.
Bartholomew: Beaten then crucified.
Philip: Crucified.
Thomas: Speared to death.
Simon: Crucified.
James: Stoned to death.
Thaddaeus: Stoned to death.
So yea, before you sign up for the whole Jesus thing you might wanna look at what happened to those you plan on following. Like Jesus said, count the cost.
I’m not trying to scare you or predict impeding death with following Jesus.
The bigger point is, ALL the gospel guanrantees is Jesus. That’s it.
Jesus is the only guarantee you have. Jesus is what you get. Jesus is the lure and the treasure.
I don’t care what some slick haired, charismatic 2AM Tv evangelist promises you, the bible and the gospel does not guarantee HEALTH, WEALTH or PROSPERITY.
The gospel got every one of its first ‘members’ brutally killed and guess what?
Nothing has changed.
Good guys still die and suffer greatly today.
You may live to be 90 and die peacefully holding hands with your beautiful bride ‘note-book’ style.
Or you may spend your whole life living sacrificially for orphans in an orphanage you started 20 years ago and randomly die young of a heart attack like Pastor Joel last year.
To be clear, I’d pick option A 10 of 10 times. But I don’t get to pick.
You don’t get to pick.
But we do get Jesus.
Is that enough? If not, then perhaps you aren’t following the same Jesus the disciples followed. The one that got them killed. The one that claimed he was worth leaving everything for.
Is Jesus enough?
This post was inspired by a question my friend Chris posted on his face-book. I’d like to re-propose it to see what you guys think.
When we lead people to Christ, should we not ask them if they are willing to give up everything before they make this decision? (Luke 14:33) Thoughts?
