Dear Christian, hang on a sec, I'm sleeping. -Jesus

Jul 11 2011

I wonder what it was like for Jesus to sleep.

Did he sleep and also watched himself sleep cause he's omnipresent?
You think he snored? drooled or rolled around in his sleep?

Did he ever have to get up in the middle of the night to pee or did he just supernaturally drain his bladder?

What about dreams? Do you think Jesus had normal dreams or crazy inception type dreams?...

Either way, I don't think the disciples cared in Mark 4:35-41.

If you're not familiar with the story, Jesus and his disciples were going on a boat ride when a huge massive storm hit.

Waves poured into the boat, threatening to sink it. And Jesus was in the stern, head on a pillow, sleeping! [The message]

Ha ha. How funny is that? The boat is about to sink from strong waves and he is napping?
There are 2 ways to look at this.

Jesus doesn't care if they died so he naps through the storm OR he is SO Great he sleeps through the storm.

Its hard to make an argument for the former cause he's in the boat with them, which begs the question:

How great is Jesus to take a nap during a storm?

I mean, I know its pretty awesome that he calmed the storm. But how great is it that he slept through a life threatening storm?

When they woke him up, I imagine Jesus with a look on his face that said 'storm?'
Really? Am I supposed to be scared? Phish! I made the storm.

Now I know the disciples did what most of us would have done in that situation: FREAKED!

But can you imagine if one of them, say maybe Thaddeus [since no one ever talks about him] pulled up a pillow to take a nap right next to Jesus. In the middle of the storm.

Can you imagine if in the middle of our storms, we remember that as bad as the waves are, God isn't freaking out?

He's God.
He's calm.
He doesn't have galaxy problems.
He's not spending his day in a think tank or trouble shooting with the smartest angels.
He's not scrambling or throwing Hail Mary's.

He doesn't share our panic attacks.
His palms aren't sweaty cause rent is due, the deadline is past or the test came back positive.

He's calm.
Not indifferent.

He IS.
Calm.

He is sovereign.
Nothing happens outside his will.
Did you hear that? Nothing out of his will.

Nothing surprises him.
He is the great I AM.
Self sufficient and self existent.
All powerful.
Nothing is impossible with him.
No story is unredeemable.

He is the greatest being in universe.

He might not be offering a solution.
Or opening a door.
Or providing.
He might not healing or telling you what to do.

In fact you're pretty sure he's sleeping. I know how frustrating it can be when it feels like Jesus is sleeping through your emergency. And I understand why like the disciples, we freak.

My hope today is we remember that he's in the boat with us. And how cool if we can just lay down and take a nap with him? Be still and know that I am God [Psalm 46:10]
