Dumb and Dumber, Vanilla ice and your faith.
Is there a movie with more memorable lines than dumb and dumber?
'We have no money, we have no food...' [finish it with me... I know you know this] our pets heads are falling off!
How about this one...
So you're telling me... [finish it] there's a chance.
One last one.
Alright stop. Collaborate and listen. Ice is back with [sing it out now]...
my brand new invention. Something grabs a hold of me...
Wait. Whoa. That's not dumber and dumber silly. That's Vanilla Ice.
I know.
And now that song is stuck in your head. All day. Sorry.
But that's kind of my point.
The mind is an amazing thing isn't it?
Isn't it incredible how we can remember lyrics to a song released in 1990?
Or how we can quote a movie released in 1994?
Or how we remember so many bible verses?
Oh wait. Not that last one.
We can't do that. We can't memorize scripture. We can't remember verses.
Its not that we don't want to. We just can't.
We can remember song lyrics, movie lines and the one thing that one guy said in season 2 episode 3 of Seinfeld.
But not bible verses. That's for spiritual giants, pastors and bible geniuses.
Its for those with the rare spiritual gift of memorizing scripture.
Isn't it incredible how much we lie and deceive ourselves?
I mean, come on, we can't memorize scripture. Really?
We can't or we wont?
Look, I'm not saying memorizing scripture is not hard. It is hard but its not impossible and you can do it.
I've never met someone who doesn't memorize scripture because of mental short-comings.
But I've met a lot of people who don't memorize scripture cause they are lazy. Or they lie about their mental capacity. Or they just don't care.
I'm not talking about John 3:16. Or that one "I know the plans I have for you" verse. I'm talking about memorizing tons of verses. Maybe even chapters.
Yes you can memorize chapters of the bible if you really wanted to.
I know you can find any verse on google within seconds. But that's not the point. The goal is not information.
The goal is a renewed mind, which happens when we chew and meditate on the word of God.
I know this might sound crazy but I promise you, if you memorize scripture it will change your life.
Folks, do you know how David stayed pure? He memorized scripture.
How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word... I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:9-11
Those of you who are regulars on this blog know that I try air out my dirty laundry quite often in here. Hopefully you’ve seen that enough that you’re not impressed by what I’m about to say.
About 7 years ago, I tried to memorize all the Psalms.
Yes. All 150 chapters. I think I made it to 30. And truth is, if I didn't get lazy, i could have done it all.
Not because I'm a genius or super spiritual. But because I grew up with a mom who built memorizing verses into the rhythm of our lives.
Even as a kid, there was never a shadow of doubt in my mind that I could memorize a lot of scripture if I wanted to.
All that to say, for the last time, you CAN memorize bible verses.
The question is will you? Be honest.
Do you memorize scripture? Why or why not?
Why do you think it's so rare for Christians to memorize scripture?
Also, regardless of where you are with this, will you commit to memorizing one verse this week? Just one. If so, tell me which one.
