Junk in my Trunk.
There's enough adventure in my car trunk to give Narnia's closet a run for its money.
Here's a few of the many treasures lurking in the back of my Chevy.
A sOcCeR bAlL. hAlF a CaSe Of WaTeR. oLd EnGiNe OiL gAlLoNs. ShAm WoW. dRuM sTiCkS and... wait for it...tWo BoWlIngB bAlLs.
Yes, I have a lot of 'junk in my trunk'.
Speaking of junk, how crazy is that 150 years from now, almost EVERYTHING we own will end up in a junkyard. Everything. JUNK!
Think about that...
*Your 3D TV
[if you actually own one of these, you need to invite my wife and I over to watch the game HGTV]
*Your Macbook
[if you're using a PC, scratch 150 years from above and replace with 150hours]
*Your nice furniture
[just think of what your great grandparents thought was 'nice' furniture 150 years ago]
*Your smart phone
[30G Iphone 145 anyone?]
*Your college degree
[yea, remember that one paper that 'earned' you 150K in debt after 8 years of school?]
*Your designer clothes, purse, shoes
[so maybe there's a chance some futuristic hipster will buy your stuff from goodwill so he can go to a theme party. I'll give you that]
*Your new car
[you should have listened to Dave Ramsey about not buying a new car]
*Your ________
[fill in blank with what your most treasured possessions].
Everything material possession you own will end up in a trash heap someday.
The irony is most of us spend so much of our time and lives chasing after all that 'stuff'.
Replace, upgrade, recycle. Its like a never ending rat race for junk.
I'm not saying I don't like stuff or don't have stuff. In fact I think God gives us 'stuff' to enjoy.
The breakdown happens though when we assume enjoyment comes from spending that stuff on ourselves. We think the more stuff we consume and get our hands on, the happier we will be.
But God says no.
Holding onto stuff with closed hands will only lead to addiction, selfishness, emptiness, idols and greed.
Want joy?
Then God says spend it on others. Use your stuff as a means to love others. Listen to how Jesus put it:
Its better to give than to receive.
I think that is one of the craziest most radical things Jesus ever said.
Its better to give than to receive?
Wow.
I don’t know about you but pretty sure I spent most of my life motivated to receive rather than give.
I’d rather fill up my trunk with more junk. But I’m changing.
I’m wanting to believe Jesus’s crazy notion that I’m better off giving/sharing stuff than consuming it. I no longer want to have stuff just to own it, I want to have stuff cause it serves people.
All your 'stuff' will end up in a junkyard, the only redemption is using said 'stuff' as a means to love people.
I want you to make a mental list of what junk material possession are gonna end up in a trash heap most valuable to you.
PERSONAL: Now think of how you can hypothetically use it to serve others? How can you give more, host more or love more with your stuff?
In other words I want you to think of one practical way you can test Jesus's crazy notion that it's better to give than to receive. Don't just think it, share it. Give yourself some accountability or nothing will happen.
GENERAL: Why does what Jesus said feel so backwards and outrageous today? Other thoughts?
LIGHT: Also, what kind of literal junk is in your trunk right now?
Please talk to me friends.
