Letter to Christian-Republican, Unrelenting-Political-Facebook-Status-Updater Guy or Girl,

Dec 9 2010

Dear Mr or Mrs Christian-Republican, Unrelenting-Political-Facebook-Status-Updater,

My name is Sammy Adebiyi. I’m from Nigeria. I inherited $50 million but I need your credit card info to access it. Just kidding. Its actually only $20 million but lets save that for another letter.
Right now I want to talk politics.
I know, sore subject.
‘Your guy’ did not win and ‘the guy’ in office is ruining everything...

Things are bad.
The economy is dreadful.
We might have a president who might not really be ‘american’ [Shady]
And he skipped the national day of prayer. Dissed the troops. [O.M.Goodness]
Health care? More like crap care.
And don’t get me started on bail-outs and the oil spill.
Man, at this rate America is gonna literally blow up.

That wasn’t sarcasm.
Ok, maybe just a little.
But I promise I’m not writing this to argue.
In fact lets just ‘say’ I agree with everything you believe politically.
Times 1000.
Obama is the second worst thing to the anti-Christ.
And I’m typing this in my Glenn Beck Pajama pants.
K?
We’re on the same page. We believe the same thing. So I’m not arguing. You don’t need to convert me. I just want to offer a different ‘biblical’ perspective on your politics. Oops, I mean, our politics.

Philippians 1. Paul was a prisoner at rome. Pretty sure they didn’t have cable TV or P-90X in Roman prisons so If anyone was going through a rough patch, it was Paul. And if anyone had a political beef to pick, it was Paul. Put in jail because he preached the gospel? Talk about injustice.

But listen to what Paul says in his letter to the Philippians.
“Now I want you to know brothers that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel.  As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ”

Amazing. But he doesn’t stop there:
“because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly”

So quick summary.
Paul in prison because of a corrupt government/injustice.
His perspective?
This is advancing the gospel. Also a great opportunity for brothers to be BOLD to speak Gods word more courageously. He rejoices.

So yea I know you’re not happy with the way things are. And yes there’s a time to speak up and a time to post your exclusive “hear obama say he hates america” video. I’m not trying to deny you that right [not that I could].
All I’m saying is, it sure would be nice to sometimes hear a gospel perspective on your politics. You know, like how Obama's shenanigans has been a great opportunity for the advancement of the gospel?

Or how the current governments mistakes has really encouraged the church to BOLDLY share the word of God and boldly engage the poor, the wounded, the broken, the illegal immigrant. [Oh no I didn’t. I totally just lost you on that last one didn’t I?].

Look, I’m not talking about simply putting a ‘Christian bow’ around our politics
. I’m taking about actually embracing this season as an opportunity to exalt Christ to the point where you can rejoice in the advancement of the gospel even though ‘the right guy’ is not in office.

Crazy. I know.
I’m just saying.
But what do I know. I’m just an immigrant from a 3rd world Country.
Besides, I don’t know your story. Chances are you probably have it way worse than Paul did and the Roman government has nothing on this Obama administration right?

Ok, I’m sorry for the satirical tone of this letter.
Feel free to let me have it in the comments.
I dealt it.
I can take it.
Just don’t forget my point:
This season of 'political turmoil' is an opportunity to exalt Christ.

And if it makes you feel better, I’m working on a letter to my democratic friends about what we do now that our guy is in office. I mean ‘their guy’. Or is it ‘the guy God picked’ since God is sovereign and ultimately determines who has authority?

“...so that the living may know that the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone he wishes and sets over them the lowliest of men -Daniel 4:17”

Hmmm.

Sincerely,
-Sammy
