Should this Christian have punched this guy back?
Few days ago I went disc golfing with four other friends and on the first hole, a random black guy with a trash bag cape walked up to us.
At first I ignored him cause I thought he was just gonna ask for money but all that changed after he swung and hit one of the guys in our group.
As we tried to respond to what just happened, he raised his shirt to show us that he was armed...
'Cape-man' was packing a knife strapped to his belt loop.
After I saw his knife and the rage on his face, I literally just froze out of fear.
For some reason he turned to Theo-one of the other guys in the group-and started hitting him in the face.
I honestly don’t know how Theo kept his cool because I’m pretty sure the guy hit him like 10 times.
He told us later he kept thinking turn the other cheek.... turn the other cheek... turn the other cheek.
It was indeed a true test of patience and a valiant effort on his part.
But it got me thinking...
How should Christians respond in situations like that? At what point do we punch back? Should we ever punch back? What if the guy pulled the knife out?
To be honest turn the cheek or pray for your enemies didn’t cross my mind in that situation. And I’m not sure I know where the line between common sense self defense and radical love is. What do you think?
Should this Christian have punched this guy back? How would you respond in a similar situation?
