Where is God when good things happen to bad people?
I googled 'where is God' and auto complete offered to finish my sentence with the following options...
Where is God when:
...it hurts.
...you need him.
...bad things happen to good people.
All legitimate questions. All worthy of valid responses. All worth wrestling with.
But also, all too common.
You know what isn’t common and is also legitimately worthy of a valid response?
Where is God when good things happen?
Where is God when we’re healthy for long seasons of life?
Where is God when we’ve driven for years without an accident?
Where is God when we didn't lose that pregnancy?
Where is God when we received the precious gift of a spouse?
Where is God when we have healthy kids?
Where is God when we experience a 1000 days of happiness, provision and companionship?
Where is God when we were born in the richest country on earth as opposed to being born in the poorest slums of the world?
Where is God when there are no tornadoes, hurricanes or earthquakes?
Where is God when we pass tests we didn’t study for, get job promotions we didn’t deserve or get a second chance for the 1000th time?
Where is God when we choose bad and good happens?
Where is God when we get mercy and grace instead of judgment and wrath?
Where is God when he accepts us no matter where we’ve been and what we’ve done?
Where is God when good things happen to me?
Its easy to point the finger of blame at God when bad things happen. Its easier to forget him when good things happen.
We question Gods presence when we’re with cancer though we never embrace days without cancer as a direct result of his presence.
Everything changes when we realize that good days and seasons are not normal or deserved by sinners in a fallen world. They are a blessing of grace.
Like old hymnal says...
Count your blessings name them one by one.
Count your blessings see what God has done.
Count your blessings, name them one by one.
And you’ll be surprised to see what God has done.
Does this make sense to anyone else? Other thoughts?
Also, where is God when _________ [insert that common undeserved blessing that you failed to give God credit for].
[If you were encouraged by this, please share on face-book/twitter. I think there are a whole lot of 'sinners (like me) experiencing good days' out there that need to ask where God is]
