Why 'dear God I must be wrong' is a great way to end prayers.

Aug 18 2011

Those of you who are parents know how frustrating it is when your kids jump in the wrestling cage with you.

Argh!

To me, the worst part is not even the subject of argument but the assumption by my daughter that regarding ______ she knows better than me.

I mean, come on.

I'm 30. She's 13
I'm father. She's daughter
I'm a man. She's a kid

In other words, I'm her 30 year old father, who wants whats best for her more than she wants whats best for her. I also love her more than she loves her.

But yet she still sometimes argues with me. She fires back at anything I say with an arsenal of excuses and reasons why her way is better.

Its the dumbest most foolish thing ever.

Its also a great reminder of how dumb and foolish it is when we argue with God.
I know we also have our arsenal or ‘excuses’ and ‘reasons’.

But really when you think about it, its incredibly dumb and foolish to think you know better than God.

I mean, come on.

1. He's been around forever. Chances are, no one reading this has been around for more than 90 years. (ok, so maybe 60. Fine 50)
2. He's all knowing & all powerful. You know some things & can bench press '300Ibs' (I’m being nice).
4. He knows what'll happen 2 decades from now [sovereign]. You don't know what'll happen in 2 hrs (10mins for the guys)
5. He's God. You're, well, you. Man. (or woman)

In other words, He's your everlasting, all knowing, all powerful, Sovereign God wants whats best for you more than you want what's best for you. He also loves you more than you love you

So, we can either trust God regarding _____ or we can argue and make dumb choices cause we know better than him regarding ____.

I'm also not saying you can't be honest with God in prayer. You can.

But as compelling as your case is... as much as your circumstances say other wise, your MUST remember that you are human and he is God.

Practically, I think it means we need to learn to end prayers differently. Like...

"God this isn't how I'd do this. I don't even understand what you're doing or why you're doing it. But I must be wrong. Cause you're God and I'm me"

I know this is strange but its so powerful to assume I'm wrong.

"Whenever I read something in the bible I disagree with, I just assume that I'm wrong" [Francis Chan]

He assumes he's wrong? Well that's dumb.
No. Its not dumb. Its smart.

Just like it would be 'smart' for my daughter to assume she's wrong when we argue.

So what's the big takeaway? Trust God. Thats it. Trust him.

When life doesn't make sense, trust that he knows whats best.
When you see things differently than what God is doing, don't settle for being right.

Fight for being wrong. Assume you're wrong cause that means He is right.

Don't make decisions or live like you're smart enough to know whats best for you.
Make decisions and live like you're a lot dumber than God.

Here's how the wisest man that ever lived put it.

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding."

What area(s) of life are you most tempted to think you know better than God?
Also, why do you think kids argue with parents and men argue with God?
